The Newsletter

In ornamentation from Gothic architecture, curves are blending in one another forming fluid motifs. All those curves are portions of circles. The art of gothic ornamentation is then how to place circles tangent to each other to form those shapes which remind us of flowers and leaves.

In this short online course of 2 sessions we will see basic shapes of gothic ornamentation: foils, which are flowery shapes with a varied number of petals. Then we will see how to combine them to start building rose shapes.

If you have done the online course I taught with the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts last year, this is very similar material. You can always sign up for a recap !

All will be traced using compasses and straight edge, using logic principles of geometry, similar to those used by cathedral builders.

This course is particularly suited for beginners.

It is possible to follow this course online, sessions will be recorded and available at least until the end of 2023.

Equipment and materials needed:
-Standard photocopy paper, or drawing paper (120grs) around A4 or A3 size (or similar)
-tracing paper (same size as your paper)
-drawing compass
-30cm ruler
-pencils or mechanical pencils (0.5 or 0.3 leads) and eraser
-some coloured pencils
-pens, eventually some coloured fine-liners

Online course contents (recordings, PDFs, links, images, etc) are accessible through your member's account on this website.

Live sessions are hosted on Zoom, the link will be sent within 48h before the beginning of the session.
