About the Pattern

Enhance your artwork with the elegance of Gothic ornamentation! In this three-session online course, you will learn how to construct geometric border designs inspired by architectural details such as panelling and guardrails.

Geometry is a traditional craft used to design motifs and pattern, using compass and a ruler together with proportion, structure and creativity.

*Note the actual patterns from the course might differ from the images displayed here, these are examples.

Course Content

No prior experience in geometry is required. This course is an inspiration for calligraphers and artists looking to integrate structured, ornamental elements into their work. Using just a compass and ruler, we will break down complex Gothic patterns into simple, step-by-step constructions.

Each session will focus on a different motif, and at the end of each session we will be able to discuss and maybe demo colouring options to bring your designs to life.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a collection of hand-drawn Gothic borders that can be beautifully incorporated into calligraphic pieces, illuminated manuscripts, or stand-alone decorative art.
