About the Pattern

Step into the graceful curves and soaring lines of Gothic architecture—this time through its arches and bay windows.

In this new 3-part course, we’ll explore one of the fundamental elements of Gothic design: the arch. From the simplest pointed openings to more complex, richly ornamented bays, arches form the backbone of Gothic structure and rhythm.

Course Content

A new online course – starting October 2025

3 live sessions (over 3 months) · Recorded · Compass & ruler · All levels

We’ll look at the geometry behind these forms, from different methods of proportioning an arch to full, finished motifs. You’ll learn how to build various types of Gothic arches with compass and ruler, and see how small design variations can shift the whole character of a structure.

While the final motifs are still being chosen, expect a balance between foundational proportions and more ornate examples that you can enjoy drawing and refining at home.

No prior experience is needed—just a compass, a ruler, and curiosity for the beauty of medieval design.
