Intro to Gothic Ornaments: Around Triangles (value 60€)
Explore the beauty and logic of Gothic design through some of its most iconic elements.
In this course, we’ll draw a variety of motifs based on triangles and Reuleaux triangles—including arches and a small rose window—while exploring key principles of Gothic geometry such as tangent circles, trefoils, and quatrefoils. These forms are essential to the language of Gothic ornamentation and offer a perfect introduction to the harmony and rhythm of medieval design.
Intro to Gothic Ornaments: Around Squares (value 60€)
Explore the beauty and logic of Gothic ornament through the power of grids and squares.
In this course, we’ll draw some motifs built from square-based constructions and grid systems.
Grids not only bring harmony and proportion, but also open creative possibilities for pattern-making—essential for anyone interested in the visual language of medieval design.
Course Content
I recommend doing them in the following order:
1 - Introduction to Gothic Geometry
If you have never done geometric drawing or if you have never explored the Gothic style, this course is perfect!
We cover basic elements that are found throughout Gothic ornamentation: trilobes (a small three-petal shape) as well as tangent circles that create the characteristic curves of this style.
We will also learn how to give thickness to the lines to add depth to the design, with also a bonus video on pencil colouring.
All you need is a compass and a ruler, and no need for a large sheet of paper for this fairly simple pattern.
2 - Intro to Gothic Ornaments: Around Triangles
In the course of 2 sessions (3h each), we will see various examples of Gothic motives on a triangle base.
Using only a compass and ruler, you’ll be guided step-by-step through each motif. After each session, you’ll receive a PDF summary to help you review the process or retrace the constructions at your own pace. (The PDF is designed as a support for the video recording.)
3 - Intro to Gothic Ornaments: Around Squares
In the course of 2 sessions (3 hours each), we will see various examples of Gothic motives on a square base.
Using only a compass and ruler, you’ll be guided step-by-step through each motif. After each session, you’ll receive a PDF summary to help you review the process or retrace the constructions at your own pace. (The PDF is designed as a support for the video recording.)
